Cold-Water Dyeing

For a lot of us, our memory of dyeing clothing and fabric is limited to throwing dye powder in the washing machine, crossing our fingers, and hoping for the best. Those days are gone, sister, and dye has grown up! Learn to use the best quality dyes to get couture results, using just rubber gloves and a washbasin--no machine required! You'll learn to mix and set your dyes, how to adjust color depth and vibrancy, and simple techiques to assure even, flawless color every time. Practice on sample fabrics, see easy techniques for using dyes to create vibrant and vintage effects, and leave with a completed tee shirt to take home!

Meets Sunday August 1 from 3-5 pm at Whipstitch.

$45 class fee includes all supplies, all the questions you care to ask, piles of messy fun and a handout to take home for your reference.

Embroidery Workshop

Our fabulously popular hand embroidery series is back! This two-night class covers all the basic skills of hand embroidery--and then some. Begin with simple stitches for clean, modern projects and quickly move up to adapting your own ideas and designs! You'll meet in our fantastic sewing lounge to relax with friends and master a skill that will be with you for your lifetime. Modern, hip, sassy embroidery is showing up all over, and you really ought to be part of it! Leave the first session with an embroidery starter kit, patterns and ideas, and then return for the second session to apply the skills you've learned to more advanced designs.

Slip Covers

A good piece of furniture is worth so much more than the purchase price, and there are few times that make that more clear than when the fabric needs to be replaced. My mother-in-law has an upholsterer on permanent retainer, but who has the time to do all that driving back and forth and selecting fabrics and waiting...and waiting...and waiting for the work to be done? Make simple slip covers for your furniture and save yourself money AND hassle! You'll learn to make a simple slip cover suitable for an ottoman or straight-backed chair, and leave with instructions for slip covering arm chairs and more! You bring your furniture and provide the fabric, we'll hold your hand and walk you through the rest!

Meets Thursday August 5 from 7-9.30 pm at Whipstitch.

$65 class fee includes some materials, a handout to take with you, and skills to last a lifetime.

Bed Linens

Quick as paint, new linens for the bedroom can tansform the way you feel about your home. As the seasons change, as your mood changes, or when you have guests come to visit, swapping out pillows and bed coverings can alter the personality of an entire room. Come join us to create a pillow sham and duvet cover, and get ideas for simple bedskirts, bolsters, and window treatments to match! You'll leave with one finished sham and a completed duvet, plus a handbook of ideas for updating the whole look of your home. You privide the fabric, and we'll provide the inspiration!

Meets Sunday August 22 from 6-9 pm at Whipstitch.

$55 class fee includes some materials, a handbook of decor ideas and instructions, and inspiration to transform your whole boudoir.

Intro to Patchwork and Quilting

Quilting has long been seen as an old lady pastime, but these last few years have seen a tremendous rebirth in quilting, patchwork, and modern art. Simple techniques can create amazingly hip results, ones that you can use to cover your bed, cover yourself, or cover your walls! Learn the basics of patchwork techniques to create a mini quilt top, then cover the steps to quilting the final product into a finished piece. Plus, master the art of the rotary cutter and mat, and learn to measure to perfection. With colors and fabrics you love, it's almost impossible to go wrong, and once you've got the basics under your belt and some inspiration to guide you, the sky's the limit!

This class assumes you have basic sewing skills. We're doing machine sewing and machine quilting: please bring your sewing machine with you!

Meets Sunday August 29 from 2-5 pm at Whipstitch.

$65 class fee includes some materials, use of shop equipment, a handout to take with you, and skills to last a lifetime.

Tween and Teen Sewing Series

Our very popular Teen sewing classes are the perfect place for learning the very beginning sewing skills--and a whole lot beyond! Students learn to thread their machines, work with hand needles, create simple patterns, stitch straight lines and curves, make linings and straps and waistbands, and so much more. Content varies month-to-month based on student skill and interest, so register all year long!

Patternmaking

You've mastered your machine, you've been sewing with patterns, and now you realize that you have ideas and visions and just can't find the right pattern to go with them! Maybe you're a budding designer, or maybe your body type isn't the one the pattern companies design for. Worry no more: making your own collection of patterns is simple and so worth it! We're practicing flat patternmaking, so you'll draft paper pattern pieces for two garments: a simple skirt and a knit top. We'll make a muslin and practice fitting that garment to your body specifically, so that when you leave, you're ready to make a whole wardrobe unique to your body and your style!

This class assumes you have Intro and Intermediate Sewing under your belt (or equivalent skills) and have either taken our Patterns I/II class or have experience sewing clothing from a pattern--you'll need a basic knowledge of sewing apparel to really get the most out of the lessons.

Meets Monday September 13, 20 & 27 from 7-10 pm at Whipstitch.

$250 class fee includes text, measuring tape, handouts, most supplies, and unlimited Sewing911 access with your instructor.

Sewing Knits (Without the Serger!)

Most of us wear knit clothing much of the time--but so many of the folks I meet are downright frightened to sew with them! Plus, many of us have been led to believe that sewing with knits requires a serger, a whole separate machine. Not so! This two-part class teaches you the basics of sewing with knits, introduces you to the range of knit fabrics available today, and walks you through a series of skill-building projects so you'll be sewing knits with confidence and style!

Meets Thursday September 2 & 9 from 7-10 pm at Whipstitch.

$165 class fee includes handouts, most supplies, and unlimited Sewing911 access with your instructor.
